In short, if I live to be an old Woman…

Today’s Jane Austen letter was actually written ‘yesterday’, 22nd May 1817.  It is a letter to her dear friend Anne Sharp and chronicles something of the illness she suffered over the prior weeks.  Somewhat fitting, if sad, when seen with hindsight — for an author who employed irony so well that she writes today’s post’s title quote, and a mention of leaving soon for Winchester to complete her recovery under treatment.  It can only leave me wondering as to what her true, private thoughts were on the matter at the time…

There’s also a very brief note from 22nd May 1801 which was a continuation of a letter from the day before.
